#Baggiodaimieiocchi literally means “Baggio from my eyes''. Baggio is a suburban and peripheral area of the city of Milan where there is a high number of families living in poverty and this number is increasing due to the COVID pandemic. “L’albero della Vita'' Foundation, located in the area, helps these families and their children with goods and various services.
Together with “L’albero della Vita'' Foundation, PACO Design Collaborative have decided to organise an afternoon course on photography with the young residents of the district. The aim of the intervention was to use this technique as a tool to talk about the neighbourhood (Baggio) from their eyes.
The course has been divided into three classes over a month: the first two classes developed online and the last class in presence. During the classes, the youth have learned the main concepts of photography like composition and lighting techniques and they were invited to put them into practice capturing their neighbourhood using their smartphones. The photos taken have been an excuse for a feedback session in which the participants expressed their feelings and thoughts about their life in the community.
The objective was looking at their neighbourhood from a different perspective, paying attention to the relation of their daily life with it. The photography gave the youth the chance to focus their minds on details that the daily routine used to cover. With the workshop the youth had noticed where they live more in depth, they thought about what they like and what they dislike about Baggio.
This is the starting point for becoming agents of change and to reflect on the power they have to improve the environment they live in.
