Children and adolescents can be the protagonists of their own lives without letting the context that surrounds them extinguish their dreams and aspirations for the future.
To do this, however, they need to be called upon to actively participate in the improvement of the reality in which they live.
#daimieiocchi ("through my eyes" in Italian) is the name of a series of photography workshops aimed at 62 young people, aged 7-13 living in marginalised neighbourhoods of five Italian cities from December 2020 to September 2021, where the local mediator, The Tree of Life, has a headquarter: Baggio in Milan; Ponticelli in Naples; Aranceto in Catanzaro; Sampierdarena in Genoa; and ZEN 2 in Palermo.
The first aim of these workshops was to bring cultural opportunities to marginalised children and adolescents, inviting them to participate in a completely new kind of experience. It is an approach to photography as a means of expression through practical and theoretical exercises, ranging from photographic captures of selected objects, places or moments to a subsequent reflection on the intentions and motivations that guided those decisions. On the other hand, we sought to understand how an artistic discipline, such as photography, can help to positively shape individuals at an early age.
The workshops were designed and run by the PACO Design Collaborative, based in Milan, which deals with social innovation projects in direct collaboration with The Tree of Life. This foundation operates throughout Italy and in some developing countries, promoting services for the protection of minors in distress, host communities, foster family networks, maternity support services, distance support and awareness campaigns around the issue of children’s rights.
